Making A Mix The Rocky Balboa Way

It’s time to work out. You’re sneakers are tied. You’re shorts are on. You’re at the door, ready for your morning power walk. Bottle of water? Check.  Dollar for a protein bar at the corner store? Got it. What more do you need?

If you’re anything like me, having the perfect music to go along with your workout is essential. There is something that feels inherently wrong about having nothing jamming in the background. It doesn’t matter if I’m listening to free mp3 music downloads of Fleetwood Mac, Nickelback, or Kanye West. I need something in my head that doesn’t sound like my own voice telling me to go faster.

Perhaps Beth Orton will enhance the sunrise this morning. If you’ve just come home from a long day at work and need to unwind, Led Zepplin’s bluesy baseline will ease you into your power walk.

•    Fat Boy Slim and Moby’s persistent beats and accompaniment create an inspiring sound that literally refuses to let you slow down.

•    Rap and hip-hop are perfect for aerobic workouts.  Beyonce, Jay-Z, and Eminem are just a few of examples of artists who know how to keep people moving.

•    For weight training, music by Metallica, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, or any metal band for that matter, gets the adrenaline pumping and will make your workout less work, and more play.

Perfecting Your Playlist

Musical artists aren’t usually subtle. If you want grinding rhythm, go to dance, techno, or hip-hop. If something more melodic suits you, go acoustic.  You can find totally free mp3 music downloads of Jack Johnson or Jason Mraz on any service offering mp3 downloads. Once you have found your mood, and perfected your playlist, the only thing left to do is sweat.
