When scheduling your first dance, consider how you want your reception to play out. Your typical dance tends to happen about 30 minutes after guests have finished their meals, immediately after the cutting of the cake. The bridal party then usually joins the newlyweds on the dance floor, followed by immediate family.
Alternatively the waltz may be followed by the father-daughter dance and the groom-mother dance. These can be relaxed and informal, or ceremonious and announced by the Band Leader or DJ.
Many couples choose to hold off until the wedding cake has been cut, towards the end of the reception, since it can be a good segue to encourage guests onto the dance floor.
Scheduling the couple’s dance to occur immediately after the reception entrance can be a great way to set the tone for the reception and ease nervousness by getting it out of the way early on in the night.
If you want to wow your guests with some fancy footwork, a choreographed routine is bound to impress. A professional dance instructor can provide tips that inspire confidence and ease nerves. Find a dance style you like and then contact a local dance studio. Most hold regular wedding dance classes in both group and private settings.
For novice dancers, four or five dance lessons would be sufficient time to master a basic routine. And remember, these days anything goes! Involve the bridal party in a rendition of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’; reenact the scene from Dirty Dancing, whatever you do have fun, and choose a song that reflects your style as a couple.
Nominated by The Knot as one of Australia’s best live wedding bands, it’s no wonder Jazz Fever has become the #1 choice for wedding entertainment in Sydney. When choosing wedding entertainment, most couples want to create an exciting party atmosphere so their guests can dance all night long to popular songs. Professional bands will even learn a song for your wedding dance, so don’t be afraid to request music that is of special significance to you. Rock And Heavy Metal Bands have a harder edge, whereas jazz music is an easier listening style that’s guaranteed to please all your guests and not make people feel uncomfortable. Live wedding music, whatever the genre or format, is an important feature of a successful wedding reception. Live bands are generally more appreciated by guests than DJ music because they create a personal, energetic atmosphere. If you want your reception to be upbeat, fun and involved, a jazz band is your best bet.
