Interview with

Fuck the Facts

By Psychopathologist

Fuck the Facts is an Experimental Grindcore band from Ottawa. I interviewed one of the band's guitarists, Topon.

L'Édition Métallique Can you tell to the readers of L'Édition Métallique what is Fuck the Facts?

Topon We're a 4-piece audio-visual collective or band... For those who haven't seen us live, we sometimes wear dresses and cause audience participation through guitar head eye spearing.

L'Édition Métallique Do you remember that you said that Fuck the Facts was " some loser in Ottawa " back when there were no shows and only Noise songs...? What about THAT (old) Fuck the Facts?

Topon Actually, FTF was never just a noise project. It started with lo-fi grind punk indusdrial recordings; I didn't start doing noise until about a year or so later. The idea has been the same since the very beginning, and it was to have a band that does whatever we want and doesn't worry about fitting into one particular style. I still enjoy listening to a lot of the old FTF stuff, of course some of it doesn't sound as good to me now 3 or 4 years later....but I'm definitely proud I did it all. I was always trying new ideas, and some worked better than others. About me calling it a "loser from Ottawa", I'm not a big fan of talking about myself and would say whatever I can to get out of it....it's a lot easier now that FTF is a true band. yipeee!!!

L'Édition Métallique To create this experimental form of Grindcore, what are your influences and what bands you actually listen to? Do these listening enable you to explore more different styles of music, not only Noise as before?

Topon Like I said, it's the exact same thing as when the project started. No difference, except for the fact that now there are 4 of us, so we have more influences. We don't go out of our way to be an "experimental grindcore" band, which just seems to be the closest description of what we sound like now. Who know in a couple of years we could be an "ambient ska black metal" band. At the moment you can catch me listening to bands like Pig Destroyer, System Of A Down, Converge, Atom Smasher, Restiform Bodies, and tons more....

L'Édition Métallique What are your current releases and what do you want to release in the future?

Topon Our releases are: Mullet Fever cdr, Four0ninE mini-cdr, Discoing The Dead cdr, Vagina Dancer tape, and Fuck The Facts tape. We also got many splits and compilation appearances. Right now, we're recording our first CD, it'll be about 8-9 new songs plus re-recorded versions of "The Burning Side" and "Nazi Skins Smashed To Shit", we hope to have it out during summer. We're also working on stuff for splits with bands like Rune, P.O.T., Manherring Bone, plus more. Kill For Food Recs (Belrus) will be releasing Mullet Fever on pro tape, Mandarangan prod (USA) will be releasing an old noise release we did called "Escunta" and Smell The Stench (Australlia) will be putting out a tape with old rare and unreleased FTF trax.

L'Édition Métallique How do we get your recorded stuff?

Topon Just check out our website at: http://get.to/ghettoblaster ...that way you can check out our releases, distro list, and other shit we do like shows, etc...

L'Édition Métallique Grindcore lyrics can go from social/political matters to gore and goofy words. Who writes the lyrics and what is Fuck the Facts' main subject?

Topon We cover a lot of different subjects including all the ones you mentioned, we don't have a main subject, it's just whatever we feel like at the time, the same way we create music. It's Mel and I who write all the lyrics, Brent has written some in the past for Mullet Fever and 409.

L'Édition Métallique I know that Brent is into rap and he done few rap tracks, does that matter with the influences of your lyrical content?

Topon I really liked the influences Brent brought into the band, he's not with us anymore but his way of thinking really worked well with us. Now we got our new singer Mel, and she brings in her own influences which are very different from Brent's but she has the right frame of mind to play with us, and definitely the voice. It's sure the hip-hop stuff won't really be a part of Fuck The Facts anymore, because it was mainly Brent's influence. It never really affected the lyrical content because everyone in the band is free to do there own thing.

L'Édition Métallique Do you plan on doing a little world tour soon? Just kidding. I mean, are you going to play shows elsewhere (Ottawa) in Canada?

Topon We've always played outside of Ottawa. Our first 2 shows were in Melbourne, Quebec and Montreal. We've also been to Quebec City, Kingston, Oshawa, Peterbourgh, London, Toronto, Guelph, Plattsburgh (New York), Hamilton, Winchester, etc.... We got shows coming up in Toronto, Quebec City, Sherbrooke, and the US.

L'Édition Métallique You did a black metal song on Mullet Fever that I found pretty funny. Where this idea did came from? Is there at least one of you guys that really is into black metal or do you just find the song goofy? You said things about Nazi Black metal bands at your last show, a thing some people I won't name didn't like (heheh). Is your black metal song somehow against that too?

Topon No one in the band is totally into black metal, but no one has anything against it. We wrote "Me and Dani Filth in a 6-4" just jamming around in the basement. I probably wrote the riff because I like playing those chords, and Brent can up with the lyrics and vocals. I don't have anything against black metal bands, I'm in contact with quite a few and they're all very cool guys and some of the music I think is fuckin' great. I just don't like Nazi, Facist, or Homophobic bullshit. If I made some people mad cause I don't like Nazi bands then I'm very happy that they don't like us, cause it's something we all feel strongly about. I have the right to tell my opinion just like everyone else and I stated it, it wasn't an attack on black metal, and the song on Mullet Fever has nothing to do with Nazi black metal, it's just about driving around in a 6-4 with Dan Filth.

L'Édition Métallique Thank you for taking time to do this interview. Any last words for fans and readers of L'Édition Métallique?
