Gorguts - ...And Then Comes Lividity / Demo Anthology
Gorguts - From Wisdom to Hate
By The Freak
Translated by Loutzenheiser

The Sherbrooke band's fans will go crazy over this CD, and those who do not know them yet, this is the CD you need. Going back to the band's early days, Galy Records offer us quite a present here. You can find demos from 1990 to 1995, they served as pre-production for a few classic Gorguts albums, and a live track as well, recorded in Val d'Or, a region of Québec which used to appreciate good ol' Death Metal. The sound is sometimes weak but the re-mastering process still augments the quality of the recording. Let's not forget that the tracks are pulled from the original tapes, and that at that time there was no digital.

Gorguts innovated with every album and the evolution can be witnessed here. Their fans will be delighted by this album and I would recommend it to those who do not know Gorguts so they can discover their roots and where they come from. In the early 90' metal was subjected to a major transformation and Gorguts were among those who stood out from the mass.

The sleeve contains photos of every member the band has had throughout the years as well as a last tribute to Steve "Death" MacDonald, who passed away in 2002. Hope Gorguts will again rise from the ashes with metal that will amaze us like no one else can! Web site: www.galyrecords.com

I've discovered Gorguts about a year ago when the band gave a live performance in Quebec City. I've liked their show but didn't go any further, not buying their album. I then saw them playing again in a memorable Dying Fetus show at l'X, but didn't buy their album even though their performance over there had been even better than the first time. What pushed me into thinking of getting one of their records was the Inverted song figuring on the excellent Skyscraper compilation, Into The Blizzard. This song instantly hooked me with it's particular style and dissonant riffs. What finally pushed me to buy an album was a Luc Lemay and Steve Cloutier-given music lesson, on guitar.com . I must say I've been a bit disappointed listening to this album. The rest of the songs aren't as good and as heavy as Inverted. The whole thing is really interesting, but I expected more. On the musical side, we're entitled to quite a technical demonstration : Luc Lemay and Daniel Mongrain give themselves to the core playing their respective guitars, in a style I couldn't qualify of anything beside "totally crazy". Steve Cloutier accompanies the two guitarists with his own particular style, supported by Steve MacDonald's chirurgically precise battery parts. In general, the album joyfully reminds me of Domination-era Morbid Angel, but with Gorguts' unique sound and dissonance tendency. In fact, dissonance is what this album is all about; melodic music fans will be disappointed by this album's particular rythmic. For those knowing how to appreciate a more researched and experimental death, From Wisdom To Hate is a most interesting purchase.

"Considered Dead" (1991), Gorguts' first album, really impressed me, a bit like New York's Immolation. After five years of absence, these guys have returned. A first listen of this album left me in utter shock, as this friggin' devastates pretty much everything... the new Gorguts album simply is great, especially for those that love complex music. Compositions are skillfully worked out and arrangements are researched and groovy. This album is for die hard technical music fans as well as for those who love musical exploration and originality.
