Death Across America
Tour at the Foufounes Électriques WOW!!!! I still hadn't recovered from the DeathFest when I heard the good news : BCI had succeeded in bringing back, at general demand, our favorite death bands. Cephalic Carnage, Deeds of Flesh, Dying Fetus and, headlining, the polonese veterans of war and destruction, Vader. What better thing to ask? I'll tell you : let's hang these fucking customs officers and other federal dummies always ruining our fun (translator note : which all the while let the real terrorists pass borders and attack our neighbors...). Yes, once again, they screwed our party by preventing Deeds Of Flesh's entrance to Shitada, this shitty country where censorship and prohibition rule above everything else, and in which we live. I nearly cried out when learning this (I must tell you that Deeds Of Flesh is one of my favorite bands... but you knew this, didn't you?), but in fact it didn't surprised me much, it's nearly a tradition around here. Nonetheless, this wound was quickly transformed into renewed strengh, as Rive-Sud's Unhuman were called to fill in Deeds Of Flesh shoes. We're lucky to have excellent local bands always ready to give us a hell of a show! Having learned about their participation the day before the show, Youri and his band faced quite a contract to fill, and did fill it quite successfully! Oh, by the way, Youri's the guy I mentionned in my DeathFest review, Unhuman's singer and guitarist. The band played us four or five of their own songs, all of them falling under the intelligent and technical kind - with a few melodic passages - of death metal, the kind proudly made in Quebec that is! Youri's vocals are really cool, he can yell crazily for a really long time all the while changing from a low to a high-pitched voice, never ceasing to whirl his dreads all around. I believe the crowd really appreciated, a pit of twenty persons having already been formed for what was only the show's opening band. It's sad they don't have a recorded album yet, they really are worthy to be discovered and listened to. You can however hear one of their song on the Nova Francia compilation issued under their label, Frowz Productions, or dowload it on www.mp3.com After them came Cephalic Carnage. They all seem much happier than last time, which is easily understood, having more than a meager twenty minutes to execute their musical set (which didn't happen last time). This time, they were ready to show us what really is a true Cephalic Carnage show! Let me tell you that these guys are geared up to face competition when it comes to the ernegy level spent on stage. They jump everywhere onstage like madmen and swirl their instruments around without fearing anything. It's like they're doing everything yet nothing in particular but, believe me, they truly know their craft. Their music is really experimental, combining grind, heavy mosh, jazz and other strange sounding influences. Unique and alone of it's kind, and excellent to say the least! Their live sound was good and, contrarily to what I feared, we actually heard the songs they were playing. Cephalic Carnage began it's set with "Observer To The Obliteration Of Planet Earth", a really good example of their own particular kind of music. They then continued with "Cryptosporidium", "'of Smoke", "Invertus Indica", "Eradicate Autority", "Paralyzed By Fear" and some others. A few t-shirts were given to those who could catch a football (from the american version of this sport) thrown in the crowd. Lenzig, their singer, asked us a few times who among those present smoked pot, question to which the audience answered "YAAAHHH!!!!". I must say they personnally define their music as one of HydroGrind, which I believe is a fitting term. The crowd's reactions were excellent and this pushed Cephalic to give themselves even more. Their performance was excellent from start to finish, and I believe they thought the same thing from us. Dying Fetus just released their new album, "Destroy The Opposition", and had come all this way up to make us discover it. Because we didn't really knew it much, DF guys were cool and didn't include too many new songs in their set, prefering to bomb us away with old classics. "Intentional Manslaughter", "Killing on Adrenaline", "Kill your Mother/Rape your Dog", "Raped on the Altar" (my favorite!!), "Skull Fucked", "Eviscerated Offspring" and so many others I can't recall were played. The newer songs, like "Praise the Lord" and "Born in Sodom", were as well received as the classic ones. Each time Dying Fetus comes to Montreal, people get crazy to the core, except Nyarlatothep's girlfriend, which is really tired to be courted by the band's singer!!! It's not for nothing Montreal's their favorite city, they even tell us each time they come! They really can't believe our trashes, and me too, I must say... I was trashing all the time they played, and it was hot as hell! Once again, I collected bruises and my arms and on my ribs... ouch, my ribs! I would like to tell though to those dirty punks to leave their studded coats behind them (or in the locker room), it hurts to get grinded on studs you dummies!!! Anyway, all of the needed intensity was there. The only thing that disappointed me (same thing as when they played at the MetalFest) is that they don't move as much on the stage as they did before, but, anyway, their musical performance makes up for this loss. They also obliged themselves to tell us a little « bonjour » (hello, hi, whatever...) and « merci » (thank you!) in french. I don't think it's possible to be disappointed by a Dying Fetus show, and this one didn't fail to apply this rule. Sorry Noc2rnal (which is our Editor-In-Chief), you missed a friggin' great show, all this because of your classes!!! Then, thanks to Steven's help (I thank you a lot, friend), I slipped to the second floor, which was closed this time to save money (by reducing the staff used tonight, I think). It also served as a backstage's extension for band members. Those who before visited the Foufounes's backstage know how small it is, it even looks like a catacomb! It's in this said grotto that I've had the chance to make an interview with John, Cephalic Carnage's drummer (go read the interview!). Right after that, I flew downstairs not to miss tonight's main course, VADER! I must first admit I didn't know them much, before. The only album I got from their band is "Litany", their last born. I knew however that they had quite a long career behind them, and many recorded albums under their belt. I expected a lot from these guys, but I must admit they've disappointed me a bit. Not because they weren't good or anything, on the contrary, their performance was top-notch. In fact, it's much more because they didn't interact with the crowd. Peter, their singer, only announced the songs they played, and none of the musicians ever really moved onstage. It's true they aren't young anymore, but, even then... I think they took us for granted, an attitude which I really dislike. They played three or four songs from "Litany", and I didn't knew the other ones, so I can't tell you about them. All of the songs were great and banged really hard. Sadly, no "Cold Demons", I love this song with the cannon shots. It's really the kind of music I would listen to on a battlefield. I think their music, in general, sounds a bit like Slayer, "Reign In Blood"-era, with a rocket in the ass. There were a few persons which brandished a polonese flag with Vader's logo on it, in front of the scene. At some time during Vader's set, they threw it in the air, and it fell directly on Peter's shoulders. He continued playing, like if the flag was his cape, incredible but true!!! The crowd was going mad but, after a few minutes, the famous cape finally fell. Even if I was a bit
disappointed by their way of using the stage, Vader delivered the goods,
and their fans have surely appreciated a lot. Once again, Montreal was
the host of a powerful and staggering event, from start to finish. The
shows are becoming better and better, and the loyal fans are increasing
in numbers. It's like a snowball slowly becoming big, it grows rapidly,
thanks to you dear readers. Continue to listen to metal and, to those
which tell you it's only a passing trend, tell them it's rather contagious.
Let's contaminate the world, long life to metal!!!
